In order to make a full and informed decision as a school community we have consulted with parents, pupils, staff and governors in order to make changes to our uniform for September 2024.

Feedback which has informed our decisions on our new school uniform was as follows:

  • Cost of some uniform items including branded items being far too expensive

  • Time used by school staff in managing uniform to ensure high standards of uniform from all pupils

  • Request for our current logo to be less business-like and more child friendly

  • Feedback that all black is sometimes too dark for young children

  • There is a need for a summer variation to the uniform

Our new logo has been designed in consultation with the pupils and links to our ‘Stronger Together’ approach but keeps the colour scheme that Leighton has always been well known for. We hope you like it! As a result of our consultation, I have reviewed the offer from our uniform provider and made a change to the company supplying our uniform to ensure that we are providing a good quality, affordable uniform for our families.

I am pleased to announce that our new provider going forward is Badged. Badged is a family run business located in Sandbach and has the benefit of an on-site shop that you can visit to view the uniform and also try on if necessary. Their website has a fully stocked online shop that can be delivered to your home for a small fee or to school free of charge. Badged have also agreed to provide a 20% discount to all pupils who are in receipt of free school meals and/or pupil premium funding.

Their website is as follows: https://www.badged.co.uk/page/school-uniform/leighton-academy

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Our Uniform Policy

Aims and objectives

It is our policy that all children should wear school uniform when attending school, or when participating in a school event outside school hours. A complete list of the items needed for school uniform can be found below.

Our policy is based on the notion that a school uniform:

  • promotes a sense of pride in the school

  • encourages a feeling of community and belonging

  • is practical and smart

  • identifies the children with the school

  • is not distracting in class

  • does not act as a barrier to parents when choosing a school

  • will meet the needs of individual pupils to accommodate their religion, ethnicity, disability or other special consideration

Clothing & Footwear

  • Royal Blue Leighton Academy Sweatshirt or Cardigan with the school logo or equivalent royal blue V-neck non-branded Sweatshirt or Cardigan

  • Official Leighton Academy Royal Blue and White Striped Tie

  • Black pleated skirt, pinafore, tailored trousers or tailored shorts

  • White shirt, short or long sleeved (please note this does not include a polo shirt)

  • Black tights, black or white socks

  • In the summer term and Autumn 1 only, pupils can wear a mid-blue gingham summer dress

Children are expected to wear sensible, black, school shoes.  Trainers must only be worn for PE lessons as they are sportswear items.  Boots may be worn to school in cold weather but should be removed when children enter school and replaced with school shoes.

PE Kit

Children can come to school on PE days wearing their PE kit. For PE all children must wear:

  • Royal Blue Leighton Academy Sports Tee or equivalent non-branded plain royal blue T Shirt

  • Plain black shorts, plain black tracksuit bottoms or plain black leggings

  • Plain black jumper or sports jacket

  • Trainers

Children are expected to wear the required kit as it is part of the school uniform. For pupils in Y6 only, Leavers’ Hoodies can be worn on PE days but not as part of the normal school uniform.

Jewellery

On health and safety grounds, we do not allow children to wear jewellery in school.  The only exception being plain earring studs in pierced ears – these must be covered or removed during PE lessons. Hooped or dangly earrings are not permitted.

Hair

The school strongly discourages children from having haircuts that could serve as a distraction to other children.  Children with long hair should have it tied back for PE lessons for health and safety reasons.  Hair bands and clips should be in school colours which are black, white and royal blue.

Staff Dress

All staff should be mindful that their dress sets an example to pupils. If staff dress smartly, pupils are more likely to follow suit.  Staff should therefore exercise professional judgement when deciding what to wear during the course of a normal school day.  For particular activities, such as teaching PE, it sets a good example to pupils if staff also change into suitable clothing.  For reasons of safety, staff should always change into suitable footwear for PE.

Parents/carers

We ask all parents and carers for their support of the school uniform policy.  Parents should ensure that their child is in the correct school uniform at all times and that it is clean and in good repair.  If any parent feels there is a good reason why their child should wear clothes that differ from the school uniform, for example due to a religious objection or a disability, please bring this to the attention of the Principal.  In extremely hot weather, ties may be removed at the Principal’s discretion.

If a child does not wear the correct school uniform, a verbal or written reminder of our expectations will be communicated to the parent/carers and children will be given the correct items to wear during the school day. We expect parents to support this.

Local Governing Board

It is the LGB’s responsibility to ensure that the school uniform meets all national regulations concerning equal opportunities and that our school uniform policy is consistent with our policy on equal opportunities.
