At Leighton Academy, we recognise the important role technology plays in children's lives. Our aim is to develop confident, creative and responsible users of technology who have the knowledge and skills they need for learning, life and the future.
We provide a broad, balanced and progressive computing curriculum that meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and is accessible to all pupils. Children have regular opportunities to develop practical skills, solve problems, work collaboratively and use technology creatively across the curriculum.
We want our pupils to understand not only how technology works and how to use it, but also how to use it safely, responsibly and purposefully. Online safety is therefore an important part of our computing curriculum and wider school life.
Our computing curriculum is progressive and builds on children's knowledge and skills throughout their time at Leighton Academy.
In EYFS, computing is embedded within our play-based curriculum rather than taught as a separate subject. Through Understanding the World, purposeful play and real-life experiences, children explore technology and develop an early understanding of how it can be used to support communication, creativity, learning and problem-solving. Experiences are responsive to children's interests and provide opportunities to use technology safely and appropriately.
In KS1 and KS2, we follow the Purple Mash scheme of work, which provides consistency, progression and appropriate challenge. Learning develops across Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy, with pupils building their understanding of programming, algorithms, computational thinking, creating and managing digital content, and using technology safely and responsibly.
Lessons are practical and engaging, with pupils using a range of devices and software, including laptops and iPads. Children work independently, with partners or collaboratively in groups, depending on the learning intention. Computing is also used meaningfully across other curriculum areas, helping pupils understand how technology can enhance their learning.
Online safety is embedded throughout our computing curriculum. Alongside Purple Mash, pupils access additional learning through National Online Safety, take part in Safer Internet Day activities and attend online safety assemblies, with support from our local PCSOs. We also provide up-to-date online safety guidance for staff and parents.
Through our computing curriculum, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to use technology effectively and responsibly.
By the time they leave Leighton Academy, pupils will:
-
understand key computing concepts and use appropriate computing vocabulary;
-
confidently use a range of digital devices, software and applications;
-
use technology creatively and purposefully across different areas of learning;
-
develop logical, critical and computational thinking and problem-solving skills;
-
understand how to use technology, data and digital communication responsibly;
-
recognise potential online risks and know how to respond and seek help;
-
work independently and collaboratively, showing increasing confidence and resilience.
