Leighton's Defibrillator is Installed

AEDs (automated external defibrillators) save lives every day, but unlike fire extinguishers and fire blankets, they are not a legal requirement for public places, including schools.

Every year 270 children will die in school after falling victim to sudden cardiac arrest and every week in the UK, 12 fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions.

Today, Leighton Academy has installed an automated external defibrillator in the main reception area.

Year 6 children learnt about the need for such equipment in schools and local areas and decided to set about an enterprise project where they 'grew a pound', selling snacks, healthy slush and homemade items at playtimes and lunchtimes. This project raised a total of £605.00 which was able to fund the defibrillator through the NHS.

Well done to all children and staff involved in raising the money for such an important piece of equipment that could save the life of any one of us in our local community.
